16 January 2017

Feeling blue?

Santa has packed away his sleigh, the Hogmanay bells have been rung and celebrities are steadily emerging from their 2016 protective bunkers. Our office doors have once again been flung open and we’re ready to take on another year.

So here it is, 2017.

365 days
8,765 hours
526,000 minutes
31.6 million seconds

Sounds a lot doesn’t it? Do you know what you’ll be doing with yours? It might be Blue Monday, smack bang in the middle of the January Blues, but we’ve found some of the best local events happening this year to help you make 2017 count.

1.    Burns Night – 25 January

If you’re attempting Dry January, look away now! What better start to the year is there than an evening of traditional music, hearty Scottish fare and a dram or two to see you through until the wee hours. Ardoe House, the Beach Ballroom, Maryculter House Hotel and Norwood Hall Hotel are all hosting Burns Suppers so look out your tartan finest and get ready for some ceilidh dancing to celebrate Rabbie Burns and all things Scottish.

2.    SPECTRA: Aberdeen’s Festival of Light – 9-12 February

Now in its fourth year, SPECTRA brings a welcome winter ray of light to Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens and three other locations around the city. This year’s theme is ‘A New Light’, with an array of installations, projections, exhibitions and events illuminating the city centre. Last year saw more than 35,000 people take in the sights of the festival which brought together leading international artists and established Scottish collaborators. Check it out!

3.    Mother’s Day at Pittodrie Stadium – 26 March

Treat the special lady in your life to a delicious afternoon tea and screening of Mamma Mia at Pittodrie’s Drive-In Cinema event. Organised by Sodexo Prestige Venue and Events, the stadium’s car park will be transformed for a special, outdoor showing of the hit musical. Sing-a-longs are encouraged!

4.    Culture Café: Ian Rankin – 05 April

Have an hour to kill on your lunch break? Aberdeen’s indie cinema, the Belmont Filmhouse, is hosting a series of writers’ talks whilst the Music Hall undergoes its transformation. April will see one of Scotland’s most successful novelists, Ian Rankin, read from his latest book, Rather Be the Devil. Demand is sure to be high so don’t miss out!

5.    Great Aberdeen Run – 27 August

If you’re looking for some fitness motivation for 2017, here it is! The brand new Great Aberdeen Run includes a half marathon, 10K and family mile and will take in some of Aberdeen’s most iconic landmarks. Thousands of runners are expected to take part, so dust off your trainers, get those training miles under your belt and prepare to celebrate crossing that finish line. Even if you’re crawling, it still counts!

6.    SPE Offshore Europe – 5-8 September

It’s the big one. Europe’s largest oil and gas event, Offshore Europe, will be returning to Aberdeen at the AECC. Expect to mingle with more than 50,000 delegates, interact with more than 1,500 companies on the exhibition floor and expand your technical knowledge with insight into the industry’s most innovative and cutting edge solutions. If your business is energy then it’s most definitely the place to be.
