SPE Aberdeen – raising the profile

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section, part of SPE International, approached ThinkPR in 2010 looking for PR and marketing support. We were tasked with improving the profile within the local oil and gas industry, increasing membership numbers and member retention, boosting attendance at events and raising awareness of SPE Aberdeen’s work with local educational institutes.


ThinkPR analysed the limited PR and marketing that SPE Aberdeen had previously undertaken, together with what other industry bodies in the market had been doing. We then devised an innovative plan based around securing media coverage within a range of publications, particularly in the local north east of Scotland media as well as oil and gas trade and technical magazines.


Between 2012 and 2013, membership numbers increased by 8%, event attendance is significantly higher and SPE Aberdeen has never had so much media coverage.

We have secured extensive media coverage for the section’s activities both locally and internationally, with coverage in the Press and Journal newspaper, Roustabout Energy International, Scandinavian Oil & Gas, Rigzone and OilVoice, to name but a few.

Introducing social media has also proved to be a resounding success, in particular on their Facebook account, which has seen a 133% increase in engagement in the last 12 months.

The huge success we have experienced with this strategy has instilled confidence in SPE Aberdeen and allowed us to further develop our relationship, continuing to manage all PR but also working with the section to set up and maintain social media platforms, plan and execute effective advertising campaigns and create member e-newsletters.
